Stainless Steel Flanges

Stainless Steel Flanges

What Is Stainless Steel Flanges?

A stainless steel flange is a mechanical component used to connect pipes, valves, pumps, and other equipment in a piping system. Flanges allow components to be assembled, inspected, replaced, or maintained without cutting the pipeline.

Flanges typically connect using bolts and gaskets, forming a secure and pressure-resistant seal.

Compared with carbon steel or cast iron flanges, stainless steel flanges offer:

  • Excellent corrosion resistance

  • Long service life in harsh environments

  • High strength and pressure resistance

  • Good welding and machining properties

  • Hygienic surfaces suitable for food and pharmaceutical use

These advantages make stainless steel flanges widely used in high-reliability industrial piping systems.

Flange Types

Welding Neck Flange (WN Flange)

Welding neck flanges feature a long tapered hub that is butt-welded directly to the pipe.

Key Characteristics

  • Smooth stress transition between flange and pipe
  • Excellent fatigue resistance
  • Suitable for high-pressure and high-temperature systems
  • Ideal for critical industrial pipelines

Typical Applications

  • Oil & gas pipelines
  • Petrochemical plants
  • Power generation systems
  • Offshore platforms
  • High-pressure steam lines

Because of their strength and structural integrity, welding neck flanges are often used in critical piping systems.

Slip-On Flange (SO Flange)

Slip-on flanges slide over the pipe and are then welded both inside and outside.

Key Characteristics

  • Easier installation compared with welding neck flanges
  • Lower cost
  • Suitable for low to medium pressure systems
  • Good alignment during installation

Typical Applications

  • Water treatment plants
  • Cooling water pipelines
  • Low-pressure process lines
  • Fire protection systems

Slip-on flanges provide a cost-effective solution for many general industrial applications.

Blind Flange (BL Flange)

Blind flanges are used to seal the end of a pipeline or pressure vessel opening.

Key Characteristics

  • No central bore
  • High pressure sealing capability
  • Allows easy pipeline inspection or expansion
  • Provides safe system shutdown capability

Typical Applications

  • Pressure vessel openings
  • Pipeline termination points
  • Maintenance isolation points
  • Chemical processing systems

Blind flanges are essential when future system expansion or inspection access is required.

Threaded Flange

Threaded flanges connect to pipes using internal threads rather than welding.

Key Characteristics

  • No welding required
  • Easy installation and removal
  • Suitable for small diameter pipes
  • Used where welding is hazardous

Typical Applications

  • Gas distribution lines
  • Explosive environments
  • Low-pressure piping systems
  • Temporary pipeline connections

Threaded flanges are particularly useful in situations where welding is not practical or permitted.

Lap Joint Flange

Lap joint flanges are used with a stub end, allowing the flange to rotate freely around the pipe.

Key Characteristics

  • Easy bolt alignment
  • Ideal for frequent disassembly
  • Lower material cost (stub end + backing flange)
  • Good for large diameter pipelines

Typical Applications

  • Chemical plants
  • Food processing pipelines
  • Systems requiring frequent maintenance
  • Low-pressure systems

Lap joint flanges provide flexibility and convenience in piping assembly.
